While this isn't my favorite track from the King of Pop, it does stand out to me. The groove is just a bit off kilter, like Michael's vocals are just behind the beat, but works out to this haunting groove. I had to use the original track as a tempo guide to match the off kilter-ness. This track balances Steve's guitar and Michael's vocals to where both are integral to the body of this track. I listened to it with just Michael's vocal over the basic beat and just the instrumental with Steve on guitar separately and found that both fall flat. It's like baking soda and vinegar. by themselves, they're just ordinary ingredients. Mix them together and you get an erupting masterpiece. I really like how the intro came out. Ominous and brooding with just the bassline, foreshadowing what's to come. Mixing this track, I've come to realize how much of a perfectionist Michael really was. Even his off-beat vocals are on purpose. You can really hear it in the "Hey baby won't you" loop in the break. I also realized how strong a vocalist Michael really was. Every "C'mon!" in the break are different yet every one can be felt down my spine. I'll admit, it made me try my own "C'mon!" but it came out like a stepped on frog, which made my cat look at me like I just turned inside-out. I also moved the "Hey baby won't you" and "C'mon!" samples to the break and left just the chorus at the end so Steve's guitar prowess can shine and added in the missing guitar fade out. Fun Fact, the theme for Top Gun was performed by Steve. He's also plays guitar for Billy Idol and Steve is needed to capture the true billy Idol sound. That and he's my favorite guitarist. Yeah, Eddie Van halen is amazing but still had to work with David and the group, which stiffled his creativity. Steve was always about musicianship and it can clearly be heard. Hope this Re-Edit does Michael's track justice for you, listener. If not, let me know what could be fixed. I like a bit of criticism. It helps me see others points of view and fine tune my mixing abilities! Aloha y'all!
