As the title describes and the present day shows, the world is heading towards a downward spiral. But, that doesn't mean the music stops. In fact, it's more of a reason to play your music LOUD! I've come to the realization that music really is the key. It's the one constant that binds us. It doesn't care about race. It couldn't give a shit about your political affiliation. Whether you live in Lebenon or Las Vegas, the music still hits the same. Studies show playing music for babies improves cognitive abilities and stimulates blocked neural pathways in older dementia patients, waking them from their lost state. Ever be listening to the radio and a song comes on that brings back a memory you haven't thought about since it's origin? You'd probably never have recalled it if it weren't for that song. Music man, the best drug out there.
I've been wanting to do another Quick Mix. For those unfamiliar, these were mixes that became popular in DJ circles back in the early 90's. Known for their heavy samples, quick transitions and a plethora of different acapellas and beats, mashed together in a short track. If you've ever been to a cheerleader meet, these were the tracks they did their routine to. Those were always my cup o' tea. I tried to keep the same structure of those but with my little twist. While most of those used rap and Booty mixes as a propellant, I decided to replace those with other genres instead. First, I needed the beat. The backbone that holds the mix together. I decided to go with Eneis' "Widowed". A dark, bass heavy DnB track I came across a few years ago. It's a shame this track never blew up. For it's time, it was fresh and different. For some reason, it's stuck with me and has become one of my go to's. It has a long, building intro so I complimented it with a solid vocal, Deborahe Glasgows' "Don't Test Me". An old Reggae banger from '89. With it's stripped down beat, it works well with the bass. Also, Reggae and DnB work well together, like coffee and cream and chopping the vocal only enhances the beat since it's half the tempo. Next, I wanted a vocal that sounds dark but isn't in context. I always got that vibe from Billy Idols' "Eyes Without A Face". The background vocal of the chorus was so haunting like a ghost floating over the beat. This also reminded me of Bruce Springsteens' "I'm On fire". Another ghostly vocal with lyrics that are pretty creepy by itself but no one seemed to mind in '85. Now that I've lulled you into this almost catatonic state, I hit you with the piercing vocal of Aerosmiths' "Livin' On The Edge". A stark track who's lyrics feels more pertinent today than when it was released in 1994. From there, I took the mix back to it's roots and brought in the Hip Hop. With chopping vocals in mind, I realized I could incorporate a mix I've always wanted to do. "Ten Crack Commandments" from The Notorious B.I.G. is a banger by itself and near perfect in my ears but I always wanted a more "direct" version with just the 10 commandments listed off, in a row. This mix was the perfect place for it. A thing you might not know about my style is I like to throw in a "left field" track to surprise the listener. You need those to keep up with the listeners attention. Even if you were to play the best tracks of a genre one after the other, they get monotonous. As they say, variety is the spice of life so I varied my track choice with one that only a few will know. An old Hawaiian song but covered by the lovely local singer, Nohelani Cypriano. She was the "Mariah Carey" of Hawaiian singers back in the day. If you haven't heard her track, Lihue, do yourself a favor and go listen to it. After my mix, though. Hahaha. "Hawaiian Soul" is just a beautiful song no matter who sings it and I thought this would bring the height of the mix back down to Earth. That and I never heard Hawaiian & DnB mixed together. It also serves as resolve for the dark mood and brings you back to lighter days.
