Acapella: Hole - Jennifer's Body
Instrumental: Sneaker Pimps - Low Place Like Home
Peak '90s, Alternative Deep Cut Edition. These two songs came out only two years apart but "Jennifer's Body" (a deep cut from Hole's brilliant "Live Through This") is a grungy blast of feminist rage from a time when girls with guitars sounded like a revolution. That is, before female-led alt-rock fizzled out a couple years later, and so-called "electronica" had its buzz year, as exemplified by the trip-hop of "Low Place Like Home," the opening track of Sneaker Pimps' "Becoming X."
Replacing Kelli Ali's dreamy but underwhelming vocals with the E M O T I O N of Courtney Love's utterly iconic yowl was the energy this track needed, IMHO. And I say this as a Sneaker Pimps fan (yes, even after they kicked Kelli out of the band), but also, as an even bigger Hole fan.
