I am not intentionally copying DSP but this is at least the 2nd or 3rd mash I've heard them use a source and then be inspired to have a go myself! Their mashups and source choices are inspiring.
This is Peter Gabriel's very recently released new track 'Panopticom' mixed with Nat King Cole's Nature Boy. Usually I hate jazz, but I make an exception for that track as it's one of my favourites...it's spooky and eerie, and fits the alienated mood of the Peter Gabriel track - talk about a genre clash! The story of that track is very odd - and for a while I resisted the combo but then I realised that not every combo has to complement - opposition is OK - and either the Nature Boy could be opposing the rise of the algoprithms and AI - or indeed be a model program simulated inside it, the last vestige of nature.
BTW I have visited Jeremy Bentham, he's embalmed in University College London, and he invented the idea of the Panopticon - the model prison/hell where every prisoner is being watched. Hence Peter's comparison with AI and new technology being like that sort of ever-watching prison.
So this is quite a deep mash with a message....as an artist I am equal parts bemused, excited and terrified of the new technologies - excited what they can do, bemused that they are quite often shit, and terrified of how they will be inevitably abused. And indeed the sheer mundanity of what it produces - and how generic it will all become. As someone said recently, we are doing this the wrong way around - we should be teaching AI the dull tasks no-one wants to do, and then using the time and money saved to liberate humanity to create art.
