Perhaps you've heard of Christmas in July before. Well, how 'bout some Halloween in June?
Among my most fun and satisfying mashup projects are those which combine upbeat songs in major keys with more downcast songs in those keys' relative minors. For example, I feel Avril Lavigne's edgy and spunky 2011 hit "What the Hell" (A major) goes exceedingly well with Depeche Mode's gloomy 1984 single "Blasphemous Rumours" (F# minor). In my opinion, this clash of songwriting styles leads to a freaky sound that's perfect for Halloween parties. Think of this mashup as a successor to "Enter Good Stuff" (the B-52's, Metallica, and others) and "Beware of Toxic Gremlins in the Office" (Britney Spears backed by some classic horror video game music).
